IRS IP PIN

The IRS Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent tax-related identity theft. It adds an extra layer of security to your tax filings by ensuring that only you and the IRS know the number.

  • Purpose: Protects against identity theft by preventing someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  • How to Get It: You can obtain an IP PIN through the IRS website by creating an online account and verifying your identity.
  • Usage: Enter the IP PIN on your tax return when prompted by your tax software or provide it to your tax professional. It's used on Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1040-PR, 1040-SR, and 1040-SS2.

How to get an IP PIN

  • The fastest way to receive an IP PIN is to request one through your Online Account. If you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you must register to validate your identity.
  • Spouses and dependents are eligible for an IP PIN if they can pass the identity verification process.
  • Once you have opted in and obtained an IP PIN online, you will need to retrieve your IP PIN online each calendar year as a CP01A Notice will not be mailed.
  • The IP PIN is generally available in your online account from mid-January through mid-November. Select the button to get started.
